[edit] Fighting the spammers
Added in SORB blocking to prevent access via IP proxies, see http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proxy_blocking and also http://www.au.sorbs.net/ for info
Installed the spam blacklist extensions to use the full wikimedia blacklist (Mediawiki Blacklist). We also now have wiki-based blacklist and whitelists that sysops can edit. NB: these block strings in http links only. The local pages MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist and MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist are used.
I have installed an extension which allows user accounts to be merged and then deleted. I have now merged all accounts that we blocked into a single Spammer account. There are still loads of rubbish accounts to be leaned up but that did not actually spam us - I'll get stuck into these but always a chance I delete a real one. Sysops should see an extra page on their special pages list.
Finally - I can grant edit access to users who do not have email addresses but I need to knwo what the members ids are.

Locked down account creation to Sysops only. To create an account for a new member go to Special:Userlogin, click create an account fill in username and email address (but not password) then click by e-mail and an account will be created with random password emailed to the user. Let's hope that is goodbye chinese spammer scum this time. Ian 30 May 2008
Enabled permissions and set it so that you need a confirmed email address to edit pages - might slow down the spammer scum Ian. 27 Dec 2007.
Sun 29 April 2007: Ian. Just upgraded to PHP 5.2.1 and Mediawiki 1.9.3.
Downtime 24-25/9 was due to a server reboot that mucked up the DNS routing - apols.
